Foundation of Elemental Existence

and the Nature of Elemental Time

Ancient wisdom brings us the concept of the Four Elements. Modern science, whilst disregarding concepts outside of its limited range of consciousness, still recognizes the four states of matter.

This chart shows the Tattva-Element relationship along with other suggested correspondences:

Tattva Element States Hauschka Time Brainwaves
Akasha Ether   Ethers Eternity
Tejas Fire Plasma Hydrogen Future Beta
Vayu Air Gaseous Nitrogen Present-
future
Alpha
Apas Water Liquid Oxygen Past-
present
Theta
Prithivi Earth Solid Carbon  Past Delta

The four tattvas emanate from the quintessences, Akasha or Ether. Somehow what I consider a sersious misconception of this has crept into modern occultism where Akasha is given equal value to the four Tattvas.

 Illogical representation of the Tattvas

Logical pattern of the Tattvas

At right is a picture gleaned from Wikipedia showing the Tattvas, notice the logically inharmonious presentation of the symbols. Akasha, the quintessence is given the same weight as the rest and is blended to make 20 symbols.

The four tattvic elements emanate from Akasha, therefore they are at different stages of activity. Concordinatly there would be relationships such as are shown with Akasha and the 4 tattvas, it is just that this mass representation does not show the true nature of what is being presented.

Using the 4 elements with their relationships, we get 16 tattvas. This pattern is dictated by a simple logic:

Earth of Fire Water of Fire Air of Fire Fire
Earth of Air Water of Air Air Fire of Air
Earth of Water Water Air of Water Fire of Water
Earth Water of Earth Air of Earth Fire of Earth

These 16 elements are also the kalas or emanations of the great Goddess Kali. Kala can be understood as "time" being both birth and death. (The word "calendar" derives from the Sanskrit usakala "cock," lit. "dawn-calling.) These kalas are the essential structural components of elemental existence, their interaction creating elemental time. Kali's kalas are the interweaving tantra of the primal material of the structure of the earth plane, or we could say that Kali is the manifestation of Kala/time.

The kalas may also be expressed in this form, the Yoni of Kali, seen at left. Akasha, the black egg, is the vesica. In relationship to the underlying structure of the Galactic Alignment Phase the vesica is the galactic center which the December solstice sun is conjuncting with. It is the great Virgin of Space which gives birth to the Sun and stars.

From the center of the galaxy stream plasmic currents which feed the solar/stellar bodies. This energy transforms through phases until it creates and sustains our earth plane. The ether/akasha unfolds into the elemental states which form the physical world. This can be discerned in the true structure of the chakras, with the four lower chakras being manifestations of the primary four elements.

My undertanding of the technical mechanisms underlying the bardo pathways of the so-calld Tibetan Book of the Dead includes that these four elemental chakras must be linked through initiatory processes (initiations of the four elements), or through rebirth in various civilizations that rayed upon earth as the sun precessed through the Zodiac. Once linked the Heart-Crown chakra system becomes activated and self-awareness dawns (hopefully!)... The bardo path is the path of interaction between our subjective and objective experiences, the Peaceful Dieties being our interactions with people through the heart chakra, the Wrathful Dieties through the crown chakra (the Wheel of Sharp Weapons).

It should be noted that in the chakras, the pattern relationship to the elements is curious as air, tattva of the heart chakra, appears after fire, the navel chakra. This chart shows the lower five chakras and their tattvic relationships:

Tattva Element Chakra
Akasha Ether Vishuddha
throat
Vayu Air Manipura
heart

Tejas Air Anahata
navel

Apas Water Svadhisthana
sex
Prithivi Earth Muladhara
root

If the lower elemental centers are not linked they do not necessarily reincarnate together as they may make different energetic bonds (karma building); the higher center active soul complex is not extant, but must be grown on the elements.

This would explain why, if reincarnation exists (as evidence has indicated for certain in some cases), that there are now more people than ever on earth. We are also at a time where the earth is being stripped of its mineral wealth, through all sorts of mining, oil & gas drilling, etc. Rudolf Steiner said that we are in an age where part of our task is to manipulate the metals and minerals to begin them on their path of spiritual evolution. He also spoke elsewhere of elemental beings and how they were released through mining. I postulate that many of the people on earth right now are these elemental beings incarnating to build the lower chakra systems through the next precessional cycle. Those of us who have attained some semblance of conscious introspection and understanding have been integrating through the last precessional cycle... waking at the end to figure it all out.

Elemental time, as we can see in the symbolic logic above, does not flow in a linear fashion, rather there is a patterned interweaving. This interweaving tantra is the underlying time structure which our apparently linear biological time moves forward on.

The Ethers

As the Akasha unfolds into the external four elements we can derive four distinct internal phases of the ether axiomatically through their manifest characteristics. Anthroposophical science defines these "Four Ethers" as Warmth, Light, Tone (Chemical), and Life.

These are respectively represented symbolically on the upper line, with the elemental tattvas on the lower line.

There is a meditative practice known as the "Tattva Vision" wherein one meditates through staring at the diverse tattva forms for a period of time, one at a time naturally, and then looks at a white surface, which produces a complementary coloured shape. This unlocks from the deep self the elemental processes of that tattva. Working through these is one form of initatory process. This may also be done with the etheric symbols.

There is an interesting interrelationship between the symbols of the ethers and tattvas. In essense they form the archetypal axioms of the interweaving of elemental time and the support of biological time. Understanding their derivation and interrelationships give us indications on how to pursue a common symbolic language for both art and science.

There are other self-logical elemental systems which will be considered as this work progresses. The art, science and culture of each age is based on how coherent our connection is with the formative archetypes at each stage. If these formative archetypes are true streams of radiant energy and information, say for example from the systems logic of the Zodiac as an expression of higher intelligence, then the truth is all around us in the real world.
